Carbon Pricing and Economic Instruments

My major research area is the effectiveness of economic instruments on climate change and air pollution. Carbon pricing, such as carbon tax or emission trading schemes (ETS), has gained attention as a mitigation policy. In Japan, the local governments of Tokyo and Saitama have adopted ETS, although there is no ETS at the national level. I received funding from the Japanese Ministry of the Environment ERCA (2-1707) to conduct an ex post analysis of the Tokyo and Saitama ETSs.

In addition, I investigate the policy option of carbon pricing to address the competitiveness issue and carbon leakage under carbon pricing. I also examine the possibility of a double dividend for the Japanese economy using a carbon tax.
